The visible change is speed

AI tools make it easier to move from an idea to something a team can react to. Designers can explore working prototypes earlier. Product managers can make concepts tangible. Engineers can test alternative interactions without waiting for a complete handoff.

That is useful, but speed is the visible part of the change. The deeper shift is that the old boundaries between describing, designing, building, and evaluating a product are becoming less stable.

Judgment does not become automatic

Generating more options does not tell a team which problem matters, what evidence to trust, or where an automated experience needs human support. In fact, cheaper output can make those decisions harder because weak directions become more polished and easier to mistake for progress.

Design has to move closer to product strategy, technical constraints, data, and evaluation. That does not mean abandoning craft. It means applying craft inside a wider decision system.

Teams need new operating agreements

The question is not which discipline owns the prompt. Teams need clarity about who frames the problem, how prototypes are evaluated, what quality and safety mean, and when a human should remain in the loop. They also need ways to learn from production behavior without treating every measurable action as success.

One early observation from working through this transition is that the design role is becoming more strategic, more technical, and more systems-oriented. The opportunity is not to defend an old boundary. It is to help the team build a better way of deciding together.
